The Garib Rath, also referred to as "poor people's chariot", is a no-frills AC superfast passenger train. It was started in 2005 by the Indian Railways. It provides concessionary air-conditioned long-haul travel to passengers who couldn't afford to travel in AC class. The fares of these trains are lower as compared to others. The passengers will get seating and AC 3-tier (3A) accommodation but won't get free bedding or food. These are superfast trains, hence their high priority in the railway network over other express trains.
The first Garib Rath Train, "12203 Saharsa Amritsar Garib Rath Express", started on October 5, 2006, between Saharsa Junction and Amritsar Junction, covering a distance of 1723 km in just 30 hours.
The class of travel available on the Garib Rath Express is AC 3 Tier (3A).
Garib Rath Express runs at an average speed of 45–82 km/h, and its maximum permissible speed is 140 km/h.
Total 52 Garib Rath Express trains are running.
